Hiking SABANAS LAGOON - PÁRAMO DE SANTA INÉS

BELMIRA, Antioquia

DESCRIPTION:

The Belmira moorland is part of the system of moorlands and high Andean forests of northwestern Antioquia, located on a high plateau of the central Colombian mountain range, with a maximum height of 3,550 meters above sea level and a minimum of 2,400 meters above sea level, 70 km north of Medellín.

Its dense hydrological network regulates rainwater and water catchment from wet fronts, providing water for more than 64 thousand inhabitants of urban and rural areas of 11 municipalities of the northern highlands and the western zone, on the Cauca River canyon and for 980 thousand people of the metropolitan area of the Aburrá Valley. One of its main trekking attractions is the route to the Sabanas lagoon, which is an example of the hydrographic wealth contained in the moorland ecosystems.

On this special occasion, we will also be taking part in the frailejones reforestation project in the páramo, in which each participant will be able to contribute by planting a frailejón tree.

The Belmira páramo is part of the high Andean páramo and forest system of northwestern mid-Antioquia, located on a high plain of the Colombian central mountain range, with a maximum height of 3,550 meters above sea level and a minimum of 2,400 meters above sea level, 70 km north of Medellín.

Its dense hydrological network regulates rainwater and catchment water from wet fronts, providing water for more than 64,000 inhabitants of urban and rural areas of 11 municipalities in the northern and western highlands, on the Cauca River canyon, and for 980 thousand people from the Valle de Aburrá metropolitan area.  One of its main trekking attractions is the route to the Sabanas lagoon, which is a sample of the hydrographic wealth contained in the paramo ecosystems.

The first part of our route is a steep ascent through large gutters, as we advance sometimes it becomes difficult to breathe, as we gain height, but then little by little our body adapts for the rest of the way, we will climb for 3 hours Approximately, we will visit a spectacular viewpoint and then we will see the beautiful lagoon, where we will take a break to contemplate the beauty of the place.

For the descent, we will go down another of the different paths that the mountain offers us, a path that later joins the main section that we took for the ascent, returning to the rocky muleteer path, we will descend, again until we reach Belmira Park .
